LLOYD GREEN MASTERPIECE TABS COLLECTION

(As played by Lloyd Green - Super Jam 1995, St. Louis - Here's the Here's the MP3 recording)

Lloyd Green uses a standard E9th setup. The only exception is that he doesn't lower string 4 a half tone. Instead he uses string 2. I designate lowering string 2 with either "LL" for a whole tone drop, or "L" for a half tone drop. I've done my best to tab out Lloyd's beautiful playing. It seems to be very close, but hasn't been checked by Lloyd. These tabs are invaluable if you desire to play more in the style of Lloyd Green. This is one of my favorite instrumental songs for pedal steel guitar. Lloyd's performance is awesome!

Listen along to the original 1995 live recording of “Making Believe”, so you can hear what to play. There's some interesting great new things in here to add to your repertoire. Lloyd's performance begins at 00:09 seconds in the MP3. There's a second great performance by Lloyd at the end of the song, which I hope to tab in the future.

*ABOVE: After the preceding section, Lloyd does some nifty harmonics as a fill. I wasn't
quite sure how he did them. When I use "Open Finger Harmonics" on the 12th fret, they work
fine, but I could tell that Lloyd is using "Closed Finger Harmonics." For closed finger
harmonics, place the tone bar on the 7th fret and then chime the notes on the 12th fret.

*BELOW: Although Lloyd rarely uses effects in the recording studio, he does use a bit for playing in public.
One effect that every pedal steel guitarist must have, and will love to use (for slower songs mostly), is a
digital delay. I use a Boss DD-3, and I also have a DD-7. I like the DD-3 best. In the piece below you can
clearly hear the echo. The piece is only picked once, but you get that cool echo sound. You leave the
digital delay on throughout the song. If it's set correctly to the tempo of the song, it won't get in the way
of your playing. It's a tool. I have my effect level set to 12 o'clock. My feedback is set to 9 o'clock. My
delay time is set between 2-3 o'clock. My mode is set to 800 milliseconds. This is on my Boss DD-3 stompbox.
I run my effect pedal AFTER the volume pedal.

D _______TIP: If your pedal steel doesn't have split-tuning capability on string 6, Lloyd's
B _______bar slant technique works great, giving you that missing G.______________________

*BELOW: This particular reverse bar slant is a real showmanship tool. I learned this trick long ago. It's an
eyebrow raiser! Just keep the AB pedals down the entire time on fret 7. Slide the rear end of the bar
up 2 frets on string 6 and then back down. It's a popular lap steel piece that was often done on the E9th.
Jerry Byrd's E9th tabs have many more cool stuff if you want to learn how to play non-pedal licks and runs
on your pedal steel. Jimmy Day very often used this reverse bar slant technique on his e9th neck.

LLOYD GREEN MASTERPIECE TABS COLLECTION

I'm an avid Lloyd Green fan and want to do what I can to help new steelers learn quickly. These tabs are invaluable. If you'd like to learn Lloyd Green's music style, then the most important thing to do is start listening to lots of Lloyd's Performances. Get the sounds into your brain. As time progresses, you'll discover the sounds on your steel guitar. You can't play it if you haven't heard it. Become familiar with the sounds. Like anything else in life, the more time that you spend with something, the more you will get out of it. My advice is to crank up your amplifier's volume so you can FEEL your music. That's very important to developing great tone. The best playing in the world is totally useless if the tone is not there. Hopefully, these tabs will help you by opening your perspective to new things on the steel guitar. The possibilities are only limited by your mind and desire to learn more. Also, I use a great program called MixCraft regularly to change the pitch in songs (so I can play in tune with the song), slow down riffs that I want to learn to play, or my own steel guitar recordings, et cetera. It's well worth the $89 for the basic version. God bless!
