Jerry Byrd C6th Tablature & More
Tablature for Lap Steel Guitar by David J. Stewart | March 2016
This is an ongoing project from my heart. I want to share with other steel enthusiasts the things I have learned over the years. Little-by-little, I'm tabbing out some of Jerry's more elaborate runs and performances, that would be extremely hard for a newer steel player. Hopefully, you'll be able to play amazing things, sooner than later, that you never could have imagined possible. These tabs are invaluable. If you have the determination, you can master the steel guitar much sooner. As Jerry Byrd says, “When you're as good as you want to be, you're as good as you're going to get!” These tabs are brilliant and advanced. Jerry Byrd (1920-2005) is an inspiration to so many steel players, including myself. Jerry plays steel with diligence, sitting attentively at his guitar, and shares his heart.

You will learn much practical experience to use in other songs, and help shape your Hawaiian skills overall. This is like a crash course in Hawaiian steel.
An interesting run from “Sophisticated Lady”E____________________________________________________________________C___________8_______8________________________6_______________________A_________8_______8__________6~4___________6_________________________G_______8_______7________4_5_____5_______5___________________________E_____8_______7_______3____________3___5_____________________________C#___________________________________________________________________The following is a wonderful performance by Jerry Byrd playing accompaniment to Hank Snow. The song title is, My Little Grass Shack. Jerry plays a beautiful piece at the beginning, which is a Hawaiian steel guitar technique that I rarely ever hear played today. Here's the tabs. The first part is just the intro that I thought you'd like to learn, but the second set of tabs is the ones I want you to notice and learn here, teaching the use of scale runs. Jerry mastered doing single notes runs, moving up an entire octave of note sometimes, which is demonstrated in the second tabs section before, but first the intro:
